When a recent design brief introduced us to Château de Voisins, a neoclassical mansion in Louveciennes in north-central France, it was the decorative details carved into and moulded inside the building that really caught our attention. The architect behind the Château and its elegant inscriptions was a Frenchman called RENÉ SERGENT (1865-1927). For FT René, we took inspiration from the characterful typographic details featured throughout Sergent’s impressive body of work. Our aim was to create an enduring typeface that, while intended for contemporary editorial use, feels as if it’s been carved out of stone. FT René is a typeface with just two optical weights and matching italics. The display style is designed for larger use-cases while the text style is optically adjusted to perform better at smaller sizes. Adjustments include lower stroke contrasts to increase legibility and ensure fine details are never lost. Key features comprise an extensive set of ligatures, indefinite and definite articles inspired by historic manuscripts, and a range of ampersands offering distinctive variations on an elegant sign.
